I just need to start this one with an apology. I'M SORRY. I got a covid puppy. But something you need to know is : I love dogs. I have made more than one attempt to obtain a puppy in the past three years, and covid made it possible for me. Unlimited free time plus: canceled plans, depressing spiral of unseen hopes, and free time to nag ones' roommate equals a PUPPY!
Basically, I nagged my Land lord and roommate enough, and they allowed me to obtain my baby boy Simon. He is named Simon because I love a growth narrative (Simon-Peter from the bible) and I thought it would be hilarious to train a dog to "speak" when you say: Simon says. HAHAHA IT IS HILARIOUS. It is a simple joy, and I have yet to teach him this trick sooo sorry.
Alas, I entered this puppy journey expecting to work hard, and I like to think I sacrificed a lot more for my puppy than many would. I have spent more than a few nights staying awake to sooth my poor boy. I have also taken my dog on more walks than I think is necessary. But I am still far away from being a good dog mom. (yes I gag a little about the dog mom part too, but let's both get over it on the count of three... 1, 2 , 3)
I adopted a dog after Covid happened. This is true. I planned to venture off to Vancouver and get a Masters degree, and conquer the world as the strong powerful human I was raised to be. Everyone was going to be so proud of me! But then Covid, and it is a blessing and a curse. I had to postpone (cancel?) grad school, and I didn't get the chance to move forward with my life. While I was maybe patching these holes with a puppy, I was really saving myself from a lot of things I wasn't ready to face: Uncharted territory. I had had my hopes dashed, and I willingly put my life on hold for the sake of comfort.
But I got Simon out of this year (along with blonde hair), and that was an unexpected surprise that I in no way regret. I have watched, read, and practiced so many different training methods. I have lovingly given away money to care for him (even though he probably doesn't need THAT many clothes) and I have tried to give him a community of people that love him.
While I recommend everyone do a better job than me, I will in no way say that I have done a bad job or made a mistake. I get why many a young couple adopts a dog in order to "practice" for when they have a child. Dogs are work, and puppies are love.
Everyone told me to absolutely NOT get a dog, and I am so glad that i didn't listen. My weird little slime-ball is amazing and I wouldn't have traded him for the world. Has my puppy made me cry? YES. Has he made me angry? YES. Is he the best part of 2020? YES!!!
Now, I am going to share with you some fun facts about Simon Alexander. Simon absolutely adores dirty clothes. Sometimes we call him a perv, because he always finds underwear and socks. Simon also loves to slither around on his face with his butt in the air. This has given him nicknames such as: slime ball, slime-on, slimey boy etc. you get the picture. Simon's favorite toy is his rope Giraffe Gerald, whom he is slowly tearing to shreds. He hates having a cold nose and will do whatever it takes to cover it, including forcing his way under your legs. Simon insists on sleeping on his back with all his limbs spread eagle. His favorite thing in the world is his Aunt Emma's blanket, much to her dismay. And Simon can always be found sleeping on the ottoman with his toy stump stuck on his head.
I am sure I will describe many more puppy adventures to you in the future, but for now enjoy these cute pictures of the weirdo! And if you are thinking of getting a puppy yourself, I will link below all of my favorite sites and products that have made puppy training that much easier. Please feel free to follow Simon on Instagram. (I caved and started an account. yikes!) Many Blessings, and a happy Holiday to you and your families!
If this season has been RUFF on you, take heart, It's raining somewhere!
